JoAnne Hoover Smith

JoAnne Hoover Smith, age 82 years, of Scottsdale, Arizona continued on her journey December 12, 2016 at the Abrazo Scottsdale Campus Hospital in Arizona. Her passing was unexpected, but with the comfort of family. JoAnne was born in Dunkirk, New York on September 19, 1934.

She is survived by her only son, Randall Smith of Phoenix.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Russell C. Smith; mother, Phyllis Simpson Hoover; and her father, M. Orville Hoover.

JoAnne graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1952, and received a B.S. in Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority and the Daughters of the Eastern Star.

She taught elementary school at No. 7 and No. 3 schools in Dunkirk until 1967, when she and her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. She spent the remainder of her career in the retail industry and was owner of a woman’s apparel shop in Scottsdale.

JoAnne was a devoted wife and mother, an accomplished pianist and vocalist, educator and business woman. She was a lover of the arts and animals and an incredibly generous person.

She was a member of the Paradise Valley Presbyterian Church choir and sang regularly with the Scottsdale Community College Community Choir.

JoAnne was my mentor, confidante, friend and my rock. I will miss her forever.

Services in Scottsdale were provided by Messinger Mortuaries in Scottsdale, Arizona. The funeral services are being provided by LarsonTimko Funeral Home in Fredonia, New York. Internment is planned for the fall of 2017 at Willowbrook Park Cemetery in Dunkirk for both JoAnne and Russell.
