Dunkirk K9 Police Officer Matthew L. Hazelton, 39, of Portland, NY died Sunday morning (August 6, 2017) at Westfield Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 9, 1977 in Dunkirk, the son of David L. (Nancy) Hazelton of Brocton and the late Debra (Quackenbush) Hazelton.

A lifelong area resident, Matthew was a graduate of Brocton Central School, Class of 1995. He served as a police officer for the City of Dunkirk Police Department for 14 and a half years, the last two years he served as the city’s K9 officer. He was a member of the City of Dunkirk’s Dive Team and was also a member of the Dunkirk Police Benevolent Association. He enjoyed martial arts and earned a black belt in karate at the Karate Connection under Sensei Norman Yonkers.

Besides his father and step mother, he is survived by his wife, Jennifer L. (Carmello) Hazelton, whom he married Sept. 10, 2011; one daughter, Ava L. Hazelton; two brothers, Scott E. Hazelton of Westfield and Ryan R. (Michelle) Hazelton of Brocton; sisterinlaw, Marissa (Joshua) Kozlowski of Fredonia; and motherinlaw, Nancy (Larry) Napieralski of Dunkirk.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his K9 partner, Nico.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 o’clock in Holy Trinity Church. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 24 and 79 p.m. at the McGrawKowal Funeral Home.
