Donald Frederick Smith
Donald Frederick Smith, age 89, of Fredonia, New York died January 26, 2018, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center. He is survived by: a daughter Tama Filipas of Portland, OR.; three sons: Douglas (Kimberly) of Pittsburgh PA., Erick of Ashtabula, OH., and Paul (Emily Seifert) of Montpelier, VT., a sister Dorothy (Late Richard) Czarniak of Dunkirk, N.Y. and a brother Dan (Sally) of Fredonia, N.Y., grandchildren Jessica and Giancarlo Filipas, Doug Smith Jr., and Graham and Genevieve Smith, and his former wife Marcia Smith of Portland, OR.
Donald was born December 26, 1928 to Nicholas L. and Helen E. (Sulenske) Smith. He earned a Bachelor of Philosophy in Commerce degree in 1949 and a Juris Doctor, law degree, in 1952 both from the University of Notre Dame. Donald served as a U.S. Air Force Captain and a J.A.G. in South Korea. He returned home from the Korean War upon his father’s passing and successfully owned and managed N.L. Smith Lumber in Dunkirk for 28 years. He also practiced real estate and law in his later years.
He was a member of the Bar Association in Indiana and New York State. Donald was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Fredonia. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, N.Y.S. Bar Association, 75thAir Depot Wing Association, and the Notre Dame Alumni Club. Except for his family, Donald got his greatest enjoyment from his friendships. His family would like to express their true gratitude to all of you for what you meant to him.
Calls may be made Thursday at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, N.Y. on Thursday from 24 & 68 pm. A Mass of Christin Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, 145 E. Main St. Fredonia, N.Y., on Friday at 10 a.m. (Please assemble at Church), where full Military Honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council following the funeral Mass.
