Francine A. Buchanan
Francine A. Buchanan of Dunkirk, died February 16, 2018, unexpectedly at her home, which she shared with her beloved husband, Michael, and daughter Angela.
She was born in Dunkirk, NY, the daughter of the late Anthony and Helen (LiVecchi) Conti.
A graduate of Dunkirk High School, she continued her education at SUNY Alfred and SUNY Fredonia, where she studied literature and creative writing.
She was well-known in the community, primarily through her work that included the Dunkirk Observer, as a copy editor; Holy Trinity School, as a Librarian/Secretary; The Record Giant, as Manager; Performance PC Computer Center; and most recently, Tim Hortons in Fredonia, where she made everybody’s day brighter for 15 years.
Everywhere she went and everyplace she worked, she made lasting friendships. People loved her for her generous and caring heart, her sense of humor and kindness, and her unique ability to make everyone she talked to feel special.
Fran often brought out the best in people, because she could always see the good in everyone.
She was an avid reader and collector of books. She especially liked mysteries and all the novels by the local author Wendy Corsi Staub. She had an eloquent way with words, both spoken and written, and had passionately written many of her own short stories and poetry. She had a deep spirituality and people could always count on her to remember their intentions in her prayers.
Her greatest love and treasure was her family. After raising her seven children, she took on the responsibility of loving and caring for a handicapped adopted child for the past 25 years.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Michael Buchanan; her loving children, Gina (David) Kron, Barbara (David Digirolamo) Sheldon, Angela Osborne, John (Aave) Sheffield, David Sheffield, Michael (Debra) Sheffield, Daniel (Thomas) Sheffield, and Stephen (Cheryl) Sheffield. Grandchildren, Justin, Scott, Joshua, Sarah, Andrea, Christopher, Jennifer, Julia, David Jr., Adam, Alexis, Sagan, Chelsea, Alivia, Katelyn, Jason, James, Nick, Tadyn, Zachary, Catherine, and 11 great-grandchildren that she adored.
Mrs. Buchanan is also survived by her brother, Anthony (Carol) Conti Jr., her beloved Mastiff dog, Beau, and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass which will be celebrated Saturday morning at 11 o’clock in Holy Trinity Church. There will be no prior visitation. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
