Robert H. Bleck
Robert H. Bleck, 92, of Dunkirk, N.Y., died suddenly Sunday, August 12, 2018 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 25, 1926 in Dunkirk, N.Y. to the late Maximillian and Estelle Bleck.
A graduate of Dunkirk High School, Class of 1944 and Syracuse University, Bob began his teaching career at Pine Valley High School and then taught at Dunkirk High School until his retirement in 1983. While at Dunkirk he served as the Chairman of the English Department and advisor to the award-winning Ivy Tower yearbook.
Bob was a veteran of World War II having received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1945. As a Syracuse alum, the football and basketball teams were his greatest pride and passion. He was also a diligent Boston Red Sox fan. Bob was also a faithful contributor to the Syracuse Alumni Fund and a longtime dedicated blood donor who reached the 100 pint plateau.
He is survived by nieces and nephews: Jean Rae Bleck of Westfield, Nancy Bleck of Dunkirk, Barbara Sobczak of Dunkirk, Roger R. (Judy) Bleck of Dunkirk, Daryl (Larry) Spacciapolli of Dunkirk, David J. (Carol) Bleck of Fredonia, and Deborah J. Bleck of Dunkirk and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings: Harry Bleck, Raymond Bleck, David J. Bleck and Genevieve Swetland.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours Thursday August 16 from 12-2pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, where a funeral service will follow immediately after at 2 pm. Interment will be in Willowbrook Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dunkirk High School Scholarship Fund in memory of Robert H. Bleck are requested.
