Robert “Bob” G. “Papa” Lancaster, age 88, of Cassadaga, N.Y., passed away peacefully with family at his side on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 17, 1930 to William and Beatrice (Turner) Lancaster. Bob served in the US Navy from 1946-48. He

joined the Fredonia Police Department in 1952 and retired in 1981. While on the police force he also drove a bus for D & F Transit. Bob was a former president of the Fredonia Police Benevolent Association. After retirement he worked at East Main News in Fredonia and at The Cassadaga Job Corp. Robert spent much of his time working with the youth in the Fredonia area while on the police force. He coached Little League Baseball for many years and worked at the Fredonia Youth Center (The Hub). He loved working with children and they appreciated him and respected him. He was always seen in uniform working the sidelines at Fredonia football games and security at Fredonia

Basketball games. He was basically a school resource officer before there were school resource officers. In 1981 he moved to Cassadaga where he was often seen fishing from his dock with his grandchildren or cruising Cassadaga Lake on his boat with family and friends. He served as Mayor of Cassadaga from 1989-95. Bob loved being surrounded with family, particularly the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would attend any sporting event, dance recital, or any event any of them were involved in. He hosted family holiday parties throughout the year. Family was very important to him.In his later years he and his wife would spend time each spring and fall in Myrtle Beach where he developed a group of friends that would meet every year. A caring and loving man, he made friends wherever he went. When you were his friend, you were always his friend. Bob had a great sense of humor and was quick with a joke. He was an avid New York Yankee fan and loved Notre Dame Football. In 1980 he was awarded the Fredonia Jaycees “Gerald “Jiggs” Dengler Community Service” award. In 1991 he was the recipient of The Fredonia Rotary “Citizen of the Year” and was cited by the Chautauqua County Youth Bureau for work great work with children. Bob was a member of the Cassadaga American Legion. Robert is survived by his wife Sherryl Bolling Lancaster who he wed on December 8, 1954 and three sons: Robert (Mary) Lancaster of Fredonia, Thomas (Kathleen) Lancaster of Cassadaga and Timothy (Sherri) Lancaster of Cassadaga; grandchildren: Ashley (Chad Anderson), Thomas, Jacob, Michael Lancaster of Cassadaga; Matthew Wallace of Fredonia and Mark Wallace of Derby; great-grandchildren: Ryan and Travin Anderson of Sinclairville; Melanie and Brandon Wallace of Derby and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Bob is predeceased by two brothers: Eric and Kenneth Lancaster and two sisters: Eva Marsh and Betty McCown.Friends and family may call today from 4-7 p.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, where funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the Cassadaga Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Cassadaga American Legion.Flowers gratefully declined.
