Twenty years ago — 1997

The renovation of the Graf Building in downtown Dunkirk should be under way by October. Plans to relocate several county offices to the building are progressing and the design process is almost complete. The final floor plan for the Health Department office is scheduled to be reviewed today. Other offices to be housed in the building include the Veterans’ Administration, the Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Mental Health, Probation and Buildings and Grounds. In all, about 20,000 square-feet will be leased by the county. The county offices will be located on the second, third and terrace levels, while the first floor will be reserved for commercial use.

Thirty years ago — 1987

From Just Between Us ….. Janell Mikula, 11, daughter of Judith Mikula, 27 East Talcott St., Dunkirk and Daniel Mikula, 30 St. Hedwig’s Ave., Dunkirk was a runner-up in a recent tee-shirt design contest sponsored by Lefthanders Magazine. Janell’s design, pictured in a recent issue, includes a drawing of a pencil and the slogan, “I don’t hold a grudge when my paper gets a smudge!” As the runner-up in the 10-15 age group, Janell will receive $10 worth of merchandise from Lefthanders Catalog. ….. Denise Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Omie Wilson of Dunkirk and a graduate of Dunkirk High School, has been selected for admission into the professional training program at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

Forty years ago — 1977

Silver Creek High School Class of 1942 recently had to twofold reason for celebration. The first and most obvious–the 35th anniversary of their graduation. The second was the reopening of the Colony House, especially for the occasion. The restaurant had been closed for several months due to a fire.

Fifty years ago — 1967

The Dunkirk City Democratic Committee has nominated Thomas P. Nowicki to be acting postmaster at the Dunkirk post office. Mr. Nowicki is city clerk and the chairman of the Democratic City Committee. The late Ignatius Fafinski held the job of postmaster until his death a month ago.
