Preaching peace, common ground

By WILFRED ROSAS

On the third Monday of January each year, we celebrate a day of remembrance for Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King was known for his spirit of altruism and peace in the face of diversity. He called upon all of America to embrace love above hate, and giving above taking. He was a man who believed in service to all mankind.

We are living in a time of uncertainty and discourse where divisiveness is evident; but in the words of Dr. King, “we all have to decide whether we will walk in the light of creative altruism or the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

Dr. King’s philosophy was to do unto others, and give of yourself whenever and wherever you can. I share that philosophy and I ask each of you to take some time on this special day for self-reflection, and find a way to celebrate the life of this great man.

The city of Dunkirk is one of the most diverse cities in Western New York, and on Monday especially, I encourage everyone to find peace where discord exists, love where there may be hate, and common ground where there may be a divide.

Wilfred Rosas is the mayor of the city of Dunkirk.
