Remember our local heroes of war

Editor, OBSERVER:

In the Nov. 5 issue of the OBSERVER, there was a very interesting article about World War II hero Louis Zamperini. It was suggested that we talk with family and people in our community about World War II veterans’ experiences.

There were five boys in my family. I am proud to say, “All five of us served.” The youngest served in the Korean War. My oldest brother, Anthony Duino, was a member of Gen. MacArthur’s Headquarters Staff in the Philippines. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese when Corregidor surrendered. He was a POW of the Japanese for three and a half years and suffered greatly. Two years were spent working in a copper mine in Northern Japan.

He did survive and returned home seriously disabled, including the loss of most of his eyesight as a result of malnutrition and inhumane treatment.

His full story is told in the book, “A Hometown Went to War,” by Roland E. Kidder, found in both the Fredonia and Dunkirk Public Libraries.
