Keep developer option open for Brooks
Editor, OBSERVER:
There is obviously some very intense posturing going on from all sides regarding the relocation of Brooks Hospital. I have one question that I hope is seriously considered during the re-use meetings should Brooks leave Dunkirk: Is anyone considering the fact that as a hospital, Brooks is exempt from paying property taxes?
The wisest and most helpful thing to do with the old facility is to sell it to a developer. Perhaps they can get an urgent care facility on the first floor — instead of on Vineyard Drive — and senior housing on the remaining floors.
At least if it’s privately held, property taxes will be paid. At the very minimum, the county IDA can become involved and structure a Payment in Lieu of Taxes proposal for any new owner.
