Twenty years ago — 1993

Student of the Week is Richard Darren Mangine, a senior at Cassadaga Valley Central School. The son of Richard and Nancy Mangine of Route 60, Cassadaga he participates in soccer and basketball and was named 3-time MVP of the school’s golf team. Richard is vice president of his class and a three-year member of Student Council. In the fall, he plans to attend either SUNY Geneseo or SUNY Fredonia to pursue a degree in secondary education with a specialization in biology.

Thirty years ago – 1983

An OBSERVER photographer snapped Charles Kelley of Thayer Hill Road, Portland as he was busy trimming grape vines on the Irving Powell farm in the town of Portland. The farm on Church Street and Thayer Hill Road has 112 acres of grapes.

Forty years ago – 1973

The Carl Vincent Club, originally known as the Sigma Phi Delta Fraternity, celebrated its 35th anniversary with a party at the White Inn, Fredonia. Joseph R. Privitera was banquet chairman.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Louis Unmack, age 80, was the caller and gave the first lesson on square dancing at the recent meeting of Dunkirk senior citizens.

Twenty years ago — 1993

The Blessed Sacrament Society of Holy Trinity Church in Dunkirk held its 75th installation of officers in the Msgr. Bernardo Hall. Elected were Mary Rotunda, president; Antoinette Catalano, vice president; Mary Leone, treasurer; and Phyllis Siracuse, secretary. The Rev. Richard DiGiuilio, pastors, thanked the members for their support during the past year.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Dr. C. McCollister “Mac” Evarts of Rochester, a native of Fredonia and a graduate of Fredonia High School, has been chosen president of the Association of Orthopedic Chairmen, the organization composed of heads of orthopedics departments throughout the United States. He will serve as president through November 1983. Dr. Evarts is chairman of orthopedics at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Forty years ago – 1973

The first 115 American POWs released by Hanoi received heroes’ welcomes today as they walked across a red carpet to freedom in an emotional greeting at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Silver Creek High School students Sandra Slocum and Robin Homokay, seniors, and SueAnn Zuzel, junior, took part in the television show, “Name That Headline,” this morning at 11:30 on Channel 2, Buffalo.

Twenty years ago — 1993

Betty Schroeder, head librarian at the Anderson-Lee Library in Silver Creek, recently retired after 14 years of service. A native Fredonian, Mrs. Schroeder began her career at the Barker Library where she worked as library clerk and then head librarian for more than 18 years. “The little kids are the best part of library work,” Mrs. Schroeder said. Sandra Apthorpe succeeds her as the next Anderson-Lee Library head librarian.

Thirty years ago – 1983

The Rev. Peter Cronin of Buffalo, newly elected U.S. Regional Director of the Columban Fathers, served a mission education assignment in Silver Creek in 1963 and later was superior in Derby, NY in 1971. Ordained in 1954, Father Cronin was first assigned to Korea where he was pastor of a parish that was part of the DMZ. Each time he ministered there, he had to be accompanied by an armed escort. His new role of regional director consists of overseeing the work of 148 Columbans in their mission education program throughout the United States.

Kevin A. Parker, 238 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk is among 10 principal nominations to the Merchant Marine Academy made by Sen. Jacob J. Javits (R/NY).

Fifty years ago – 1963

The “Pairs and Spares” of the First United Presbyterian Church, Dunkirk held a tureen supper with Mrs. Hobart Ames and Mrs. Louis Silverman as hostesses.

Twenty years ago — 1993

Testimony from Dunkirk resident and St. Hyacinth Church parishioner Lillian Halasinski that she was cured of diabetic neuropathy through the divine intercession of a Polish nun who died in 1899 is being cited as the chief reason Pope John Paul II has decided to beatify the nun. That nun is Mother Mary Angela Truszkowska, foundress of the Felician sisters. Mrs. Halasinski, who is 79, testified that she was instantaneously healed on Jan. 4, 1984 when severe pain and swelling of her left leg disappeared.

Mary Lee Williams of Silver Creek was presented with the sixth annual “Prophet’s Hoe” award at the annual meeting of the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry. The award is presented for faithful and devoted service to the community to a person who exhibits prophet-like courage in the pursuit of justice for all disadvantaged people. Mrs. Williams was recognized for her “unselfish contribution of time, energy and inspiration to furthering the goals of the Rural Ministry.”

Karen Pawlak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Pawlak, 411 East Main St., Fredonia has left for Barcelona, Spain, where she will study for this semester at the University of Barcelona in affiliation with the State University of New York foreign language overseas study program.

Fifty years ago – 1963

In honor of the 60th anniversary today of the Holy Rosary Society of St. Hedwig’s Parish in Dunkirk, a banquet will be held at the Kosciuszko Club following the noon high Mass.
