Featured in an article by OBSERVER Sports Editor Jerry Reilly are three Dunkirk brothers who, unable to find jobs before World War II, became boxers as a way of making meal money. Raised at the St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Dunkirk, Phil, Joe and Sammy Muscato all used boxing as a way out into the world. All three had fought distinguished amateur careers. All three fought professionally during the 1940s at a time when Buffalo was a boxing hotbed. It was the No. 1 sport in Buffalo, which had six world champions, more than any other city in the United States. Joe and Phil made their mark nationally as well.

For the second straight month, Dick and Mary Ann Brochetti of Central TV in Dunkirk received an astronomical telephone bill from their out-of-town long distance company. The bill contains an invoice for $38,649.25 covering calls made during the past two months. The latest bill of $13,583.62 includes charges for $10,398.83 in international calls and $3,184.69 in domestic calls. The previous bill was $25,065.63. The Brochettis believe someone got hold of their long-distance identification code and passed it out for others to use. The company is said to be investigating.
