Twenty years ago — 1997

Cliffstar Corp., the nation’s leading private label juice manufacturer, has appointed James S. Koch as its chief executive officer and chairman of the board. He replaces Stanley A. Star, who remains as director. Mr. Koch joined Cliffstar in 1986 as director of sales and marketing. He was promoted to president of the company on Jan. 9, 1989. From 1972 to 1986, Mr. Koch held various positions with Koch’s Brewery, the most recent  of which was vice president of sales and marketing. Cliffstar manufactures more than 145 quality Corporate Brand Label fruit juices and drinks for the leading grocery customers throughout North America. The company has manufacturing facilities in Dunkirk, Joplin, Mo., and Fontana, Calif., with processing plants in Warrens, Wis., and East Freetown, Mass. Thirty years ago — 1987

Student of the Week is Michele Dubert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dubert of Webster Road, Portland. A senior at Brocton Central School, she has been a staff writer and sports editor for the school newspaper, “The Brocton Review,” and a reporter and sports director for “High School Highlights” on radio station WDOE. Michele’s byline has also appeared on the “Bulldog Bulletin” featured in the OBSERVER on Saturdays. The reigning “Miss Portland,” she has attended the Empire State Games and a member of the National Honor Society. Michele plans to attend Brockport State College where she will major in radio/TV communications.

Forty years ago — 1977

A pictorial argument is made regarding the need for a new fire hall in Fredonia. Pictured is a fire truck backed into a kitchen area of the station which is crammed for space; a series of jacks and beams used to support a section of the station in the hose tower; and barrel support for a section of the basement.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Robert W. Bender of 606 Park Ave., Dunkirk received a trophy as the winner in the first snowmobile competition ever held in the Pocono Mountains and staged at Buck Hill Falls, Pa. He finished first in a 10-mile race involving 45 contestants and witnessed by more than 1,000 spectators.
