Twenty years ago — 1997

Dr. Dennis L. Hefner, the new president of Fredonia State University College, said in an OBSERVER interview that his decision to apply for the top post at Fredonia State was based on the college’s nationwide reputation as a quality institution of higher learning. Both California natives, Dr. Hefner and his wife Jan relocated to Fredonia Jan. 16. Asked to list his goals for the campus, Dr. Hefner replied that he would like to build upon Fredonia’s academic strengths and improve the college’s academic standing. “The college attracts outstanding students,” he said. “It is frequently referred to as one of the jewels in the SUNY crown.” He noted that the college has one of the highest graduation and retention rates of any public university in the nation.

Thirty years ago — 1987

As the guest speaker of the Fredonia Rotary Club, Dr. Richard O. Lundquist, professor of business administration at Fredonia State University College, spoke about his unique experiences from June 1985 to August 1986 as a teacher at the University of Zimbabwe in Africa. Dr. Lundquist was one of 13 business professors chosen as Fulbright Scholars last year. While in Africa, he established the “Distinguished Management Award,” which will recognize managers who show ingenuity in their business and government organizations. In addition to teaching and lecturing, Dr. Lundquist took part in a safari, went on a canoe trip, and played his cornet with bands in about 15 different cities.

Forty years ago — 1977

ConRail has firmly rejected a proposal to consolidate all traffic through Dunkirk over its tracks, according to state Department of Transportation spokesman. The city had proposed using the ConRail (formerly Penn Central) tracks for Norfolk and Western trains passing through Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1967

A crowd of about 250 was on hand to greet Sen. Robert F. Kennedy when he arrived at Dunkirk City Hall. Sen. Kennedy and his party had spent the earlier part of the afternoon in Irving visiting the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. Following his warm reception at city hall, Sen. Kennedy toured the Boorady Reading Center with Sister Marie Baptista, director.
