Twenty years ago — 1997

The Dunkirk Housing Authority has authorized collection procedures for $11,723 in unpaid rents from former tenants of DHA-owned properties. According to DHA Executive Director Judith Presutti, the DHA has retroactively figured how much it is owed from each of the tenants and will be pursuing the collections through Small Claims Court. The DHA has been able to collect some of the overdue rents through wage garnishments. The board is also considering raising its required security deposit from $100 to $150 to help cover any losses from unpaid rents.

Thirty years ago — 1987

Henry K. “Mike” Williams IV of Fredonia has been named editor of the OBSERVER. The announcement was made by H. Kirk Williams, the former editor, following the recent annual meeting of the stockholders of the Dunkirk Printing Co. H. Kirk Williams is president and publisher. The new editor joined the newspaper in 1976 as a reporter and then became news, wire and front page editor. He later held the post of editorial page editor. He has been serving as vice president and general manager of the company and will continue in those positions.

Forty years ago — 1977

L.A. Brooks of the Excelco Developments Inc. in Silver Creek, recently returned from a trip to Seoul, Korea. As he stood outside the new Seoul-Tokyu Hotel, he noticed a large car parked at the curb. It was a Mercury Marquis and the dealer’s name was Hartley Ford of Fredonia.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Mrs. M. Joan FitzPatrick Dean has been awarded a bachelor of laws (LLB) degree from the Blackstone College School of Law in Chicago. Since 1948, she has maintained Dean Insurance Co., specializing in bonds and student accident insurance. Mrs. Dean resides at 43 Albany Ave. with her husband Paul and three children.
