Twenty years ago — 1997

The Brocton Main Street Revitalization Committee recently held the first of an anticipated ongoing series of meetings at the new Portland Town Hall on Route 20. Chairman David Travis said the focus of their work has been established and invited business people in the community to get onboard.

Thirty years ago — 1987

A National Football League Players Association survey indicates Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills could be the game’s highest-paid quarterback. The Buffalo News said today that the five-year, $8 million contract Kelly signed Aug. 18 with the Bills may have provided him with up to $3 million last season. The contract guarantees Kelly a minimum of $5.3 million by the end of 1988.

Forty years ago — 1977

Empire Developers of Fredonia revealed preliminary proposals for the development of the entire prime site between Main, East Third and East Fourth streets and Park Avenue in Dunkirk. Included is a proposal that calls for the construction of a three-story, 45,000 square foot county office building outsided the prime site on the south side of East Fourth Street west of Deer Street.

Fifty years ago — 1967

School districts in Chautauqua County have openings at the present time for some 160 new teachers on the elementary and secondary levels. Among the vacancies are many in specialized areas such as reading, school psychologists, art teachers and speech correctionists. Salaries range from $5,200 to $9,500.
