Twenty years ago — 1997

The Rotary Club of Dunkirk recently celebrated last year’s Home and Garden Show and the annual FLY-IN Breakfast at the Dunkirk Airport. This group of local business and professional men and women continue to actively support a wide variety of community youth programs. The club recently held its 60th anniversary celebration at the Four Points Hotel in Dunkirk.

Thirty years ago — 1987

Eighty-six percent of all Americans say the American dream is alive and attainable but a vast majority say the concept is threatened by drug abuse, crime and a decline in quality of education, a survey said today. Elements of the dream cited were getting a high school education, 84 percent; having freedom to choose how to live, 80 percent; and owning a home, 78 percent. The cost of achieving the dream is an average household income of $50,000 a year.

Forty years ago — 1977

Calendar Girl for the month of March is Jean Marie Danton, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel S. Danton of Cassadaga. A senior at Cassadaga Valley Central School, Jean ranks first in her class and is a Regents scholarship winner.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Herbert F. Strubing, son of Mrs. Eliza Strubing of Marsden Street, Dunkirk was recently awarded the degree of doctor of education at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Strubing presently holds the position of assistant professor of education at Geneseo State University College.
