Thirty years ago — 1987
Boy Scout Troop 254 recently held the Eagle Investiture of Kenneth J. Mekus in Seton Hall. The son of Mrs. Alice Mekus, 602 Park Ave., Dunkirk, Kenneth is an active Scout and avid camper who assisted in many troop and Eagle Scout service projects. His own Eagle project was the building of a sign for Washington Park in Dunkirk as well as refurbishing the benches, repairing the fountain pad and painting the fountain, and repairing and seeding many areas of the lawn.
Forty years ago — 1977
Dr. Robert Rie, professor emeritus at Fredonia State University College, has been awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor, First Class, by the government of the Republic of Austria. He received the prestigious medal for his contributions to science and art on March 11 at the Austrian Institute in New York City. Fredonia College President and Mrs. Dallas K. Beal accompanied Dr. Rie to New York.

Deborah Wolfe, secretary of the junior class at Fredonia High School, is this week’s Student of the Week. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Wolfe, 27 Clinton Ave., Fredonia.
