Thirty years ago — 1987

Carol Haas Bedford, a Dunkirk native, was named Counterpart “Woman of the Year” during a recent luncheon at the Holiday Inn in Spring Lake, Mich. Counterpart is an organization of women in the Tri-Cities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg, Mich. The honoree is married to William “Bill” Bedford, also a former Dunkirk resident, who is co-owner of Wharf Marina in Grand Haven. A teacher at Grand Haven High School, Mrs. Bedford is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Haas of Dunkirk.

Forty years ago — 1977

Shown in an OBSERVER photo are St. Hyacinth School pupils James Tarnowski, grade 8, and Kenneth Gula, grade 7. They were the winners in a regional essay contest sponsored by the Benjamin Prescott Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. The contest topic was “A Famous Battle of the American Revolution.”

Fifty years ago — 1967

Charlton Heston, Laurence Olivier, Richard Johnson and Ralph Richardson star in “Khartoum” playing at the Capitol Theater. Admission is $1.25 for adults; $1 for students and 50 cents for children.
