Thirty years ago — 1987
An OBSERVER photo shows movie director John Hughes with David Raiport of Gowanda, a movie extra featured in a diner sequence filmed in Gowanda. Mr. Raiport, a deputy with the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department, became a “special movie extra” when his distinctive laugh got the director’s attention. The Paramount Studio production spent a week in Gowanda filming parts of the comedy movie, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
Forty years ago — 1977
Michael Smith, a senior at Silver Creek Central School, will travel to Syracuse to compete in the NYSPHSAA Bowling competition as a member of the Section VI All-Star Team. SCCS Coach Rick Skovinkski’s leading scorer earned the All-Star position with a 588 series bowled recently at Sectional competition. The son of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Smith, Lake Road, Silver Creek, Mike has participated in Junior Bowling programs for the past seven years, this being his fourth year as a member of the SCCS Varsity Bowling Team out of Lakeview Lanes.
Fifty years ago — 1967
The Fred Koch Brewery of Dunkirk has received another award for safety. The local industry was given an award for three years without a disabling injury.
