Thirty years ago – 1987

The Western New York Education Service Council has recommended the merger of the Westfield Academy and Central School and the Mayville Central School District. The merger, as recommended by the study team, would consist of utilization of both school buildings. The report calls for kindergarten through fifth grade students to remain in their original school districts with an elementary principal for both schools. A middle school would be created and housed in the Mayville building. The high school would be housed in the Westfield building.

Forty years ago – 1977

It has been a five-year tradition of Dunkirk’s Ron Szwejbka of 52 North Jerboa St. to take an April 1 swim in Lake Erie and this year was no exception. Joining Ron in this year’s chilling thrill was Dave Bernstein of 15 Benton St., Dunkirk. The two polar swimmers hopped aboard one of the many pieces of ice floating in the Wright Park area to have their picture snapped by the OBSERVER photographer.

Fifty years ago – 1967

Mayor Joseph J. Steger has announced that the review committee has approved a grant in aid for the purchase of the Boleslaus and Celia Fijal property and property owned by the World War II Inc., Dunkirk Veterans on North Serval Street as an addition to Wright Park.
