Thirty years ago – 1987
All that remains is Fredonia High School Board of Education approval of David Polechetti as head boys varsity basketball coach following the recent announcement that he has been recommended for the job by the school’s athletic department search committee. Athletic Director Dave Ball, who serves on the committee with high school principal Tom Heary, said Polechetti’s name won’t be put before the board until October, but Ball expects no snags.
Forty years ago – 1977
The Benjamin Prescott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have received word that Mary Gavin has won the district prize of $5 for her essay, “The Battle of the Saratoga” in conjunction with American History Month. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Gavin of Dunkirk, Mary is a fifth-grade student at School 5. The other two local finalists were Kenneth Gula and Timothy Tarnowski of St. Hyacinth’s School.
Fifty years ago – 1967
Members of Boy Scout Troop 52 of Silver Creek erected a totem pole as part of their display at the Scouting-in-Action show being held at the Wheelock School in Fredonia. Among those working on the display were Robert Piede, James Parisio, Scoutmaster George Petrakos and Philip Petrakos.
