Thirty years ago – 1987

A “Do You Remember?” photo shows the Gowanda High School basketball team of 1946-47, which was undefeated (19-0) and Section VI Class A champions. They defeated Olean for the third time to win the Cattaraugus County Class A championship, beat Silver Creek for the Bi-County Class A title and downed Sloan High School for the Section VI crown. The team scored 914 points to 497 for its opponents. Charles Perkins was the captain and Milan Miller was the high scorer.

Forty years ago – 1977

Laurie Veringa and Edith Artman of Westfield won the NASA Award for their display of Sunspots at the 20th annual Allegheny Mountain Science Fair held at Fredonia State University College. Other local award winners were: David Syracuse of Fredonia Catholic Schools who placed in the zoology exhibits for his display on “The Body and How It Works.” Jim Adamczak of St. Hyacinth’s won third prize in engineering for an oil display. The fair had entries from 18 schools from throughout western New York and Pennsylvania.

Fifty years ago – 1967

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dunkirk, will begin its 80th anniversary celebration on April 10. Speaker will be the Rev. Donald Bendewald, a missionary. A pageant is planned on April 14 and two worship services are scheduled on April 16.
