Thirty years ago – 1987

The Ripley Fire Department has bestowed its first Fireman of the Year Award. Taking part in the ceremonies were Ken Cave, fireman of the year; Richard Archer, fire chief; and Gary Skinner, first assistant fire chief. Navy Petty Officer John Visosky, 27, of Dunkirk is the top sailor of Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego, California, the largest naval industrial complex on the West Coast. He is the son of Stephen Visosky of Forestville and Olive Visosky of Dunkirk.

Forty years ago – 1977

The 1976-77 Smith League All-Catholic basketball team included senior forward Don “Killer” Kuligowski, the circuit’s scoring champion with a 25.1 ppg average and a unanimous choice. “The Killer” ended his career as both the second-highest scorer and second-highest rebounder in CMHS history. He rang up 1069 career points (14.6 ppg) and 602 career rebounds (8.2 ppg) over 73 games. Tom Krystofiak holds the Mindszenty records in both categories.

Fifty years ago – 1967

Open house was held April 9 at the James Place, Fredonia apartments – the only housing project of its type in the area. Each two-bedroom apartment has a private patio or balcony.
