Thirty years ago – 1987
In separate issued statements, the Rev. Bruce A. Buchanan announced his plans to leave the pastorate of the First United Presbyterian Church of Dunkirk and his wife, Ms. Carol Adams, announced she has submitted her resignation as executive director of Chautauqua County Rural Ministry Inc. effective May 12. The couple is moving to Dallas, Texas, where Rev. Buchanan will become the associate pastor for community ministries at the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas.
Forty years ago – 1977
The former owner of an aluminum extrusion company in Dunkirk’s Progress Park that was sold last fall to Alumax Extrusions is planning to operate a small manufacturing plant in a building at 23-25 Lake Shore Drive East at Washington Avenue in Dunkirk. Sam Avny, who came to Dunkirk in 1973 to open the aluminum company, plans to manufacture metal carts and racks in his new business which will have five employees. He resides at 35 Gardner St., Fredonia.
Fifty years ago – 1967
George H. Weller Sr., former manager of the railroad division of Vanadium Corporation to America and earlier sales manager of the American Locomotive Company in Dunkirk died recently at a nursing home in Yonkers. His grandfather, Peter Weller, was a co-founder of the Brooks Locomotive Plant with Horatio G. Brooks.
