Thirty years ago — 1987
Nearly 250 employees of Fredonia State University College honored J. Carter Rowland at a reception for his 15 years of administrative leadership as vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Rowland resigned from the post early this year and will begin a sabbatical leave in the fall as a consultant to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Forty years ago — 1977
The girl “Jolters” of St. Joseph’s School for Exceptional Children captured the New York State Floor Hockey Championship for the developmentally disabled. Teams from throughout the state competed at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The Jolters, pioneers in floor hockey for girls, defeated teams from Erie-Cattaraugus BOCES II and Wayne County BOCES by 14-0 and 4-0 scores to gain the title.
Fifty years ago — 1967
Mickey Mantle hit the 500th home run of his career at Yankee Stadium, giving the Yanks a 6-5 victory over Baltimore. The 35-year-old slugger told reporters he hit “the big one” as a Mother’s Day gift to his wife.
