Thirty years ago — 1987

The Rev. John Kilian, a Dunkirk native and a priest for 25 years, observed his silver jubilee on May 24 at St. Hedwig’s Church in Dunkirk. The son of Helen Kilian of Dunkirk and the late Casimer Kilian, he was ordained to the priesthood on March 17, 1962 by Bishop James Burke. The first priest ordained from St. Hedwig’s Parish, he returned there to offer his first Mass on March 20, 1962. Presently, Father Kilian is the resident Roman Catholic chaplain at the Wyoming Correctional Facility in Attica.

Forty years ago — 1977

Students of the Fredonia High School Drama Club participated in and received first-place awards at the annual Western New York State Theatre Festival held recently at Geneseo State University College. Among those who performed are Kim Carpenter, Carol Cotton, Kelly Hayes-Raat, Tim Hassett, Dan Spencer, Mark Draggett, Steve Griffith, Shelly Fote, Giselle Frazeur and Jeff Custer.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Stanley Fedyszyn, 327 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk was named “Kiwanian of the Year” at the seventh annual Dunkirk Kiwanis Club Charter Night banquet.
