Thirty years ago — 1987

A portrait of Arthur R. Maytum by Fredonia State University College professor emeritus Dr. Lawrence Urbscheit was formally presented to the Maytum family by the Fredonia College Foundation. The portrait hangs in the administration building named for the former businessman and local leader. Robert Maytum Jr. is the past chairman of the Fredonia College Foundation.

Forty years ago — 1977

Dunkirk High School’s student newspaper, “The Citizen,” received the H. K. Williams Award at St. Bonaventure University’s 40th annual Press Day held in May and two DHS students were the recipients of individual honors. Richard Valvo, adviser for “The Citizen,” presented the awards to Douglas Brown, winner of two New York Times certificates for feature writing; and 1976 co-editor Ginger Formanowicz, New York Times Certificate of Merit for editorial writing.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Fredonia Mayor Russell R. Joy cut the ribbon to start a three-day opening celebration at Jack O’Connell’s Discount Center, 45 East Main St., Fredonia.

Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Newman and daughter, Natalie, have moved from 432 Eagle St., Dunkirk to their new home at 309 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk.
