Thirty years ago — 1987
In an OBSERVER photo, Elmer “Tug” Horey of Fredonia points to the barracks he was housed in while being held as a prisoner of war during World War II. He is holding a picture of some of his mates from the camp as well as a certificate he just received at a reunion of the POWs depicting the move he and his mates made from the Stalag XVII camp to where they were met by the 90th Infantry.
Forty years ago — 1977
Sandra Sack of Blanding Road, Silver Creek was given a standing ovation as she was presented the “Citizen of the Year” award at the Silver Creek Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet held at the Holiday Inn in Fredonia. County Legislator Delmar Brinkman, last year’s award recipient, made the presentation to Mrs. Sack.

The Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce has been given permission by the New York State Thruway Authority to relocate the tourist information booth on Route 60 just north of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Exit 59.
