Thirty years ago — 1987
Three and a half years ago, Ed Buchar of Grimsby, Ontario, Canada (near Niagara Falls) reluctantly agreed to join a friend in a “bike trip” around the world. Now nearly 37,000 miles later, he is on his way home. The bicyclist was in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area and told the OBSERVER that he and his friend cycled through western Europe, North Africa, India, China, Japan, Southeast Asia and the west coast of Australia. He added that he was robbed once and hit by cars twice.
Forty years ago — 1977
The Dunkirk Jaycees Club held their first installation banquet in 10 years at the Top of the Mark restaurant in Dunkirk. Various awards were presented to the local chapter for the year 1976: most improved chapter in District IX; largest membership incentive for a chapter in one month (25 new members); and the Jaycee of the Year award to James A. Wright, an employee of Chautauqua Vending Amusement and Interstate United. He also is the newly elected Jaycees president.
Fifty years ago — 1967
Miss Sandra Montgomery of Silver Creek has won the state championship, the challenge trophy and a gold medal in the intermediate ladies figure event of the New York State Roller Skating Championship held on Long Island.
