Thirty years ago — 1987

Former Fredonia resident Mark Merchant was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the second player overall nationwide in the amateur free agent baseball draft. Much of his early baseball training came from his father, Bob, who was a basketball official in Chautauqua County and employee at King Windows in Dunkirk before the family moved to Florida in the early 1970s. When in Fredonia, the family last lived at 118 Lambert Ave. Mark’s mother is Mary Kay Ferguson Merchant.

Forty years ago — 1977

About 30 new employees will be hired at the Dunkirk plant of the Great Lakes Color Printing Corp. when a new $4 million offset press is installed here in 1978. The six-unit press will be set up in the existing building at the Dunkirk plant on Stegelske Avenue. Mostly commercial work such as circulars and magazines will be printed on the new four-color press. Most of the work formerly done at the recently-closed Wilkes-Barre, Pa., plant will now be done in Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Mrs. Ralph Bekeleski, 425 Townsend St., Dunkirk has completed her training at Doyle Beauty School in Buffalo and has received her New York State beautician’s license.
