Thirty years ago — 1987

Former Dunkirk Mayor Gilbert Snyder was endorsed by the Dunkirk Republican City Committee for that party’s nomination in the November election. Mr. Snyder won the endorsement over Councilman-at-Large William Schlichter in a 23-5 city committee vote. Shortly after the votes were counted, however, Mr. Schlichter announced that he would pursue the party’s nomination by challenging Mr. Snyder in a primary election.

Forty years ago — 1977

Naval militia memorabilia presented recently to the Historical Society of Dunkirk included plaques, paintings, documents, pictures and a scrapbook. The items date from June 1912, when the Dunkirk facility was founded by the late Dr. Harry B. Lyon, to May 1, 1977 when it was announced that the state Naval Militia building at Point Gratiot will be used as a fish research center by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Fifty years ago — 1967

David J. Doino of the Marine Midland Chautauqua National Bank in Dunkirk is a member of the class of bank officers who will enter the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at its annual summer session this month. The sessions will be held at Rutgers University.
