Thirty years ago — 1987

The annual spring banquet honoring Dunkirk teachers past and present was held recently at the Kosciuszko Club. More than 70 teachers met to pay tribute to Margaret Mahaney, the 1987 Colman Award winner, and two retirees, Janice M. Tramuta and Margaret G. Temple. Mrs. Mahaney is a retired elementary school teacher with 36 years of teaching in the Dunkirk Public Schools. The Colman Award is a monetary gift, made available from a bequest left by William Colman, to a deserving retired teacher in the Dunkirk Public Schools.

Forty years ago — 1977

The federal government in a report due later this month is expected to order the city of Dunkirk to make more of an effort to hire blacks and Puerto Ricans for city jobs. The same report is expected to direct the city to emphasize community development projects that benefit the majority of low and moderate income families in Dunkirk. Failure to comply with the conditions set forth in the report could jeopardize future federal funds earmarked for Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Raymond Dorler has been elected permanent chairman of the Dunkirk Veterans Council Henry R. Ippolito, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony C. Ippolito, 762 Main St., Dunkirk has received his LLB (bachelor of law) degree from Cornell University.
