Thirty years ago — 1987

It took hundreds of people and many hours of labor, but the Creative Playground in Silver Creek was completed on schedule. Located on the grounds at Silver Creek Elementary School on Bennett State Road, it is open to the public. An example of a well-organized community effort, the idea for the playground was developed about one year ago. The project was started through a joint effort of the Silver Creek Chamber of Commerce and the Parents Group.

Forty years ago — 1977

Nathaniel Ludlum, who has operated Ludlum’s Variety Store in Dunkirk for 32 years, is negotiating to sell his business to the Ben Franklin Variety Store chain. Ben Franklin will reportedly operate at the present site of Ludlum’s at 421 Main St. until it erects a new building on property on the north side of the existing store. Mr. Ludlum started his business in a store that previously housed the Rosario ice cream shoppe. Ludlum’s now has 17 employees.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Mrs. Mary Ann Bentham, immediate past president of the Silver Creek Business and Professional Women’s Club, has been elected to the office of recording secretary of the BPW Clubs of New York State Inc.
