Twenty years ago — 1997

This year the Gowanda area is fortunate to have two youngsters participating in the Western New York Children’s Touring Chorus. Dixie Forbes, daughter of Carl and Judith Forbes of Versailles and Meghan Hinkley, daughter of Kevin and Barbara Hinkley of Gowanda, have been performing with the chorus for two and half years. Locally, they have performed at numerous concerts in the Buffalo area including the Holiday Pops Concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Doc Severinson. A cultural gem, the WNY Children’s Chorus is becoming internationally recognized for performance excellence. This summer, the girls will be touring England and France from July 26 to August 9.

Thirty years ago — 1987

From City Shorts ….. A bulge in the road in the 700 block of Washington Avenue is apparently caused by the expansion of bricks under the pavement. Stones may have become wedged between the bricks over the years, making it impossible for them to expand when the temperatures are high. … Several cars in the city employee parking lot on Lynx Street reportedly received a light coating of yellow paint when spray paint from a nearby renovation project was blown over the area by the wind. The company renovating the Stearns Building (which is across the street from the lot) said that the water-based paint should just wash off. He added that in the future, painting operations will be suspended when the wind picks up.

Forty years ago — 1977

Linda Barmore, Cassadaga Valley School Board representative from Gerry, was elected president of the CVCS board at its annual organizational meeting. Mrs. Barmore, the first woman elected to the office of board president in the history of the district, will serve a one-year term.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Robert L. Strickman of River Vale, N.J., has invented a cigarette filter reported to be 70 percent more effective than those currently in use. The filter is made of a crystalline synthetic substance which will remove most of the tar and nicotine from cigarette smoke without hurting the taste.
