Twenty years ago — 1997

Adrienne M. Larimer, daughter of Alan and Sandra Larimer of Fredonia, has been selected as a Rotary International District 7090 exchange student. She will travel to Kimberley, South Africa this week to begin a one-year stay. She is the only exchange student that District 7090 will send to South Africa. Kimberley has a population of 105,000 and is the capital of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province. It is known as “The City That Sparkles,” because it is considered the diamond capital of the world. Adrienne is a 1997 Fredonia High School honors graduate. She served as senior class president and co-editor of the yearbook. She has been accepted at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and will begin her studies there upon her return from South Africa in June 1998.

Thirty years ago — 1987

The Chautauqua County Vacationlands tourist booth located on Shortman Road in the town of Ripley is open for the summer season. Last year, about 20,000 people stopped at the Ripley booth, which provides tourist information such as state brochures and brochures about businesses in Chautauqua County and other areas of the state. Free grape juice will also be provided again this year through a grant from the Wine-Grape Foundation. There are two people presently working at the Ripley location, with up to eight expected for the summer season. The Ripley booth will remain open through the month of October.

Forty years ago — 1977

The Chautauqua County Office of Employment and Training (CETA), formerly Manpower, recently opened its north county branch office in Fredonia at 45 East Main St. The county department administers employment and training programs funded through the U.S. Department of Labor.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Michael A. Cerrone has been elected president of the S. Howe Co. Inc. in Silver Creek to succeed the late Alexis Cartier Barbeau. Mr. Cerrone formerly held the position of vice president. A graduate of the University of Buffalo, he became associated with the company eight years ago and has worked in all the departments.
