Twenty years ago — 1997

The Graycliff Conservancy has signed a contract to purchase the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Graycliff home in Derby. The conservancy has been negotiating with the Piarist Fathers, the order of Roman Catholic priests which currently owns the home, for about eight months. The conservancy will have to raise $400,000 to purchase the house by June 1, 1998. The sale is good news to Margaret Foster, granddaughter of Isabelle and Darwin Martin. The Martins built Graycliff as a summer home in 1927 and it has been promoted as one of the nicest spots on the Lake Erie Shore.

Thirty years ago — 1987

Ann McCarron, director of public safety at Fredonia State University College, was voted “most outstanding instructor” recently by faculty and students at the SUNY Public Safety Academy. After teaching a course of sex crimes investigation to new public safety officers during their 11-week training program, she was presented with the “Directors Award For Excellence in Training Instruction.” Ms. McCarron has directed the college public safety department since 1982. She is a 1984 graduate of the FBI management course for police officers and has addressed many national conventions. Formerly a police sergeant at the University of Missouri, she is a graduate of Loras College in Iowa.

Forty years ago — 1977

Miss Edna Boorady of Dunkirk was recently sworn in as director of the Agency for International Development’s Mission to Guyana. She is the first woman to direct an overseas mission in the history of the U.S. foreign economic assistance program. A veteran foreign aid expert, Miss Boorady has served as director of the Office of Special Assistant for Labor Relations since 1974.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Mrs. Grace Policella was named Woman of the Year by the Silver Creek Business and Professional Women’s Club at the annual employer-employee dinner held recently at the Colony House Restaurant. She has been a Girl Scout leader for 10 years. In 1964, she received the St. Ann’s award medal for her contribution to the spiritual development of girls in the Girl Scouts. She also was a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts program, an active participant in AFS and extremely active in her church, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
