Twenty years ago — 1997

Janet R. Jarvis, Children’s Librarian at the Dunkirk Free Library, was honored by the community at a reception at the Dunkirk Moose Lodge on Nov. 16. More than 300 people attended the celebration to thank Mrs. Jarvis for enriching the lives of their children through her stories and programs over the last 17 years. Mrs. Jarvis has made the Children’s Room an inviting place where every youngster wants to visit. Seventeen years ago, she began with 13 children a week in story hour. It has developed and grown to almost 200 children a week. The Summer Program has grown to more than 530 children with special events attracting 800 to 1,000.

Thirty years ago — 1987

Grand opening ceremonies for the new Rite Aid Pharmacy in Silver Creek were held this month. The new building is on the site of the former Ludeman’s Department Store, which was torn down this summer. The former Lodico Pharmacy building, which was located on the corner of North Main Street and Central Avenue, was also torn down to provide a spacious parking lot for the new Rite Aid Store. The Silver Creek store’s opening coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Rite Aid Corporation. The first store was located in Scranton, Pa. Currently, there are over 2,030 stores in 22 states and the District of Columbia.

Forty years ago — 1977

Honored in this week’s People in Profile is Joseph C. Gullo of Dunkirk who has worked tirelessly to help Holy Trinity Church and to promote charity programs sponsored by such groups as the Dunkirk Kiwanis Club, St. Columban’s Seminary, Muscular Dystrophy Drive and the High Fever Follies, benefiting Brooks Hospital. Mr. Gullo was the owner of Joseph’s Clothing Shop for 24 years, after having worked at the New York Store for 22 years.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Mrs. Genevieve Ludemann, a fifth-grade teacher at the Harry E. Wheelock School, has been chosen Teacher of the Year by the Fredonia Teachers Association. In her 12-year classroom career, Mrs. Ludemann has taught at many different grade levels and has instructed a special class. She has been on the Wheelock school faculty since 1958.
