Twenty years ago — 1997

The parishioners and friends of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church gathered last month at the Colony Restaurant in Irving to honor the Rev. Gerald P. Sheehan on the occasion of his 10th anniversary as pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church in Forestville. Rev. Sheehan has been pastor of St. John Bosco since 1982 and assumed the pastorship of St. Rose of Lima on Nov. 28, 1987. The evening included a dinner, a roast and toast of the pastor and presentation of a commemorative plaque. It concluded with the parishioners singing a song written for the pastore by Helen E. Lee.

Thirty years ago — 1987

Many Niagara Mohawk employees were rushed to Eastern New York last month to help with the massive restoration of electric facilities, which were destroyed in a freak snowstorm. Among those taking part were members of a crew from Niagara Mohawk’s service center in Fredonia. Assisting with the Albany operation were Nick Salemi, Kenny Boldt and “Sunny” Osborne. While cutting trees, they helped a fellow worker whose leg was severely cut when his chain saw malfunctioned.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Dedication ceremonies and open house activities for the new offices of the Dunkirk Youth Bureau were officially announced today by Joseph Damiano, executive director. The offices are located in the basement of the Wright Apartment building. Open house ceremonies are scheduled to take place Dec. 13. On hand for the activities will be Jackie Robinson, special assistant to Gov. Rockeller on community affairs. Mr. Damiano stated that Mr. Robinson, a former baseball star and now a promoter for community works and youth activities, will also speak at assemblies at Dunkirk High School and Cardinal Mindszenty High School.
