Twenty years ago — 1997

State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Gerace recently ruled that Dunkirk Mayor Margaret Wuerstle acted properly within her power and authority to eliminate six management level employees as part of her plan to deal with a fiscal emergency by cutting $500,000 from the city budget. In his ruling, Judge Gerace noted the Dunkirk Common Council must either concur with the mayor’s decision or reject it at an open meeting rather than in executive session. The union which represents the city’s management employees had filed the court challenge against the elimination of the six positions.

Thirty years ago — 1987

The Forestville United Methodist Church, 3 Park St., is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, which also marks the 125th year of the current building. The church began its ministry in the village of Forestville, then known as Walnut City, in 1812, under the auspices of the Episcopal Methodist Church. A total of 121 pastors have given their time and talents to the church and community. The current ministry centers around the worship services, Sunday School and the United Methodist Women’s group, an adult fellowship, a prayer group and once a month children’s activities.

Forty years ago — 1977

The National Secretaries Association (International) Jamestown Chapter, recently presented Miss Cynthia Rozewicz with their annual scholarship award. Miss Rozewicz is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ratka of Irving. She is a senior in the two-year administrative executive secretarial program at the Jamestown Business College.

Fifty years ago — 1967

It was announced today by Dalton R. Burgett, president and Richard Frey, general manager of the Dunkirk and Fredonia Town ‘n Country stores, that the company has purchased the Westfield Town ‘n Country Ladies Store from Mrs. Grace Trippy of Westfield. Plans call for remodeling the Westfield store to include a complete women’s, children’s, shoe and men’s shop in the new branch.
