Twenty years

ago — 1998

The Rev. John Reese was ordained as an Episcopal priest and installed as the 27th rector in the 175-year history of Trinity Episcopal Church during a special Eucharist celebrated recently at the historic church located on Fredonia’s Barker Common. A reception followed at the White Inn with family members, parishioners and clergy from throughout the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York in attendance, including Rev. Reese’s wife, Jeanette; his mother, Mrs. Rose Reese and the Right Rev. David C. Bowman, Episcopal bishop of the WNY Diocese.

Thirty years ago –1988

Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Odebralski Sr., 115 South Martin St., Dunkirk was honored recently upon his retirement from the Army National Guard. A dinner/Christmas party was hosted by members of Dunkirk Company A/127 Armor Division at the National Guard Armory. During his 33 years of service, Mr. Odebralski served as tank crewman, tank commander, platoon sergeant, first sergeant and mess sergeant. Special guests at the party included retired Col. Raymond T. Clark, the first company commander in Dunkirk; Capt. Gerald A. Bilquin, the present company commander; and former retirees of Company A, as well as present members and guests. Mr. Odebralski is an employee of Alumax Extrusions Inc.

Forty years ago — 1978

The OBSERVER Pet of the Week is Mac Dougal, a Scottish terrier owned by Mr. and Mrs. Mark A. Czekanski of 305 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk. The dog is shown in an OBSERVER photo with the Czekanskis’ son, Lucas.

Fifty years ago — 1968

The Dunkirk Common Council has accepted the bid of American LaFrance Co. of Elmira for the purchase of a new aerial ladder fire truck. One of two bids received by the council, it was for $54,056.
