Twenty years ago — 1998

Support for the Jacob Lapp family of Cassadaga in its battle with the Internal Revenue Service continues with the Independent Citizens Committee for Fair Treatment of the Lapps developing further plans of action. According to Chairman Gary Noyes, these include a letter writing campaign and a benefit dinner. Noyes explained that the IRS has never proven that the Lapps owe any money, but is, through an action taken against the family, taking all of the milk check money earned through the dairy farm operation. This amount totals roughly $51,000, of which more than $40,000 has been paid off so far.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Student of the Week is Melissa Marciniak, a senior at Westfield Academy and Central School, has been chosen Student of the Week. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Marciniak of Sherman Road, Westfield. Melissa is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in the 3-1-3 program at Fredonia State University College. She plays the flute in the school band and serves as director of the marching band’s color guard. Melissa plans to continue her education with a major in business administration and management at the University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio.

Forty years ago — 1978

By a better than two-to-one margin, people favor the newspaper over both radio and television, according to a 1977 survey of OBSERVER readers conducted by Jerry Reilly, a senior mass communications at St. Bonaventure University. A total of 67 percent of the women and 59 percent of the men said that they turn to the newspaper first when seeking information. Radio was picked as the second most used media and television was third. In a survey of 254 readers, the OBSERVER was chosen by the residents as the most interesting of six newspapers with large circulations in Northern Chautauqua County.

Fifty years ago — 1968

The 62nd annual ball of Murray Hose Co. No. 4 was held Jan. 20 at the Kosciuszko Club with music by Tubby Wallace. The company was organized on Feb. 6, 1906, with its first president being Michael Czysz. During this year, it was decided that an annual dance will be held at the beginning of each year.
