Twenty years ago — 1998

A meeting designed to address issues and concerns regarding the current non-smoking laws was held recently in Dunkirk at St. Hedwig’s Church. According to Ron Szot, a Chautauqua County legislator and St. Hedwig’s Church trustee, the meeting was attended by more than 40 people. Non-smoking laws have affected church bingo attendance and profits in recent months. Northern Chautauqua Catholic School officials fear the ban may force Catholic schools to close due to a lack of funding. Bingo profits pay for a majority of the stipends submitted by churches to support Catholic schools.

Thirty years ago — 1988

The proposed budget for Lake Erie State Park near Brocton includes a swimming pool and a project to improve fishing. The budget for the Route 5 park has been approved on the local level, but still must be adopted by the State Legislature. As part of the regional state park master plan, the Allegany Regional Parks Commission is trying to get money to protect the Lake Erie shoreline at Lake Erie State Park. The master plan covers renovations, the building of recreational facilities and the utilization of the natural resources available in the park system.

Forty years ago — 1978

Cleanup still continues on a spectacular early morning blaze that recently leveled four businesses at the four corners in Cassadaga. The building, constructed sometime in the mid-1800s, housed four businesses: Gems and Junk (an antique store), Bowl Again Bowling Alleys, Titus TV and Service and the Cassadaga Youth Center.

Fifty years ago — 1968

Sgt. James A. Andrews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew C. Andrews, 8 Lafayette Ave., Dunkirk was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and accompanying citation for meritorious service during his tour of duty in Vietnam. The presentation was made recently by his commanding officer.
