Twenty years ago — 1998

The Sheridan Town Board revealed it is considering bestowing a landmark status on St. Columban’s Retirement Home located on Route 5. The status would allow the retirement home to be open to a different grant status they couldn’t get otherwise. “It would help St. Columban’s a lot,” said Town Supervisor John Walker. “They are in a business where they can’t raise prices a lot.”

Thirty years ago — 1988

Beginning July 15, a new ruling from the Federal Highway Administration will require a commercial license of anyone who drives a truck weighing at least 26,000 lbs., and local firefighters warn the addition to the Commercial Vehicles Safety Act will have a direct effect on volunteers at the Fredonia Fire Department. All the vehicles in the department weigh over 26,000 lbs. The fee for the license is borne by the applicant but Fredonia Fire Department officials feel such a fee should be paid by the village and not its volunteer firemen. Letters of concern will be sent to state and federal officials.

Forty years ago — 1978

Alan Costantini, news anchorman on Channel 4-TV, will be a special guest at the auction in Silver Creek to raise funds to purchase smoke detectors for low-income families in the area. The auction will be held at the Fire House at the end of Jackson Street. Mr. Costantini will assist auctioneer Marvin Smith in the fund-raising event. He spend most of his early life in Dunkirk where he attended St. Mary’s School and Cardinal Mindszenty High School. He was born in Silver Creek. Mr. Costantini had worked for WDOE in Dunkirk before leaving the area.

Fifty years ago — 1968

The formal opening of the Plymouth Tube Co., a division of the Van Pelt Corp., will continue this week for city officials and customers of the corporation. Those industries touring the plant today are members and representatives of industries which are concerned with heat transfer equipment. Also on the tour are representatives of major utilities and various consulting engineering firms. Dinners are served to the guests and the entire day has been planned for viewing the plant’s operations located on Roberts Road in Progress Park.
