Retrospective

Twenty years ago — 1998

After an off year in 1997, early indications are the local residential real estate market may rebound in 1998 due to two key factors — low rates on mortgages and good weather. The mild winter, thanks to El Nino, has resulted in a good start for 1998 with many people looking at and buying homes. Home ownership programs such as the one offered by CORE Area Preservation Co. have also boosted sales. Reasons cited for the drop in home sales in 1997 included concerns about the future of Niagara Mohawk and AL Tech Specialty Steel, two of the area’s largest employers, and the reaction to the first revaluation project in the city of Dunkirk in 25 years.

The change to Brooks Drugs was made recently after considerable paper work was done by the store’s owner, Adams Drug Co. Inc., whose main office is in Rhode Island.
