Twenty years ago — 1998

After capturing a number of state awards, the Chautauqua County American Legion Boy Scout program is in the national spotlight. Honored as the sponsor of one of the nation’s most outstanding scouting programs, the county Legion is the winner of the prestigious Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award. The award cites strong support of scout troops sponsored by Chautauqua Legion Posts and focuses on the yearly county encampment each fall. The Camporees date back to 1985 at Camp Gross near Cassadaga. The award was presented to James Hayward of Cassadaga, county legion scouting chairman.

Thirty years ago — 1988

The Federal Communications Commission has ordered an administrative hearing to decide who should receive a license being issued for a new Fredonia-based FM radio station. The order, issued last week, noted that the FCC has received six applications for the license and that the hearing will be used to determine which of the six proposals (if any) would best serve the public interest. Those who applied for the license include David O’Conner, Chautauqua Communications Corp. Inc., Catoctin Broadcasting, Lake Shore Broadcasting Co. of Jamestown, Robert M. Bennett of Buffalo, and Hector Rivera and Vincent Ridikas, doing business as Chautauqua Radio Limited Partnership.

Forty years ago — 1978

Because of interest and time given by Miss Cleone J. Boardway, RN, of Fredonia, a pin designating graduates of the former Brooks Hospital School of Nursing is now part of a permanent collection owned by R.N. Magazine. The Brooks Hospital Nursing School pin is now one of 744 pins collected by R.N. Magazine since its founding in May 1970. The Brooks Hospital School of Nursing was founded in 1901.

Fifty years ago — 1968

A wise-cracking, hazel-eyed Fredonia State University College freshman from Corning was crowned by ninth Miss Dunkirk-Fredonia in the Dunkirk Junior High School auditorium after two nights of competition sponsored by the Dunkirk Jaycees. Pert 18-year-old Barbara Ann Prouty, who walked off with the preliminary talent trophy in earlier judging, won a $300 Dunkirk Ice Cream scholarship, nearly $1,000 in gifts from local merchants and the opportunity to try for the Miss New York State title this summer in Olean. First runnerup was Julia Yvonne Ary, a college sophomore from Pleasant Valley, who had captured the preliminary swimsuit trophy. Among the six finalists was one local girl, Sonja Alice Martinson of Fredonia.
