Twenty years ago — 1998

Seneca Nation of Indian leaders are seeking input from nation members on whether to pursue a gambling casino off tribal land. Enrolled members of the Seneca Nation, more than 6,000 people, were invited to cast ballots in a gambling referendum on the Allegany and Cattaraugus reservations today. Seneca voters rejected Class III (casino) gaming in a 1994 referendum, with many citing concerns that the Nation would compromise its sovereignty if it entered into a compact with New York state to open a casino. The 1994 vote was preceded by weeks of anti-gambling protests.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Pictured receiving awards at the Fredonia Fire Prevention Committee’s first annual awards dinner were committee members and volunteer firemen George Tadt and Dale Van Valkenburg for good service and Kimberly Wdowiasz for her heroic efforts in March to rescue an elderly man from his burning home on White Street. Presenting the awards was Fredonia Fire Chief Robert Swyers.

Forty years ago — 1978

The new Fredonia Wastewater Treatment Plant is now fully operational, according to plant chief operator Dr. Jack Gaasch. The final connection, diverting the flow from the Chestnut, Matteson and Berry Road area, was completed April 18. The old plant is no longer receiving sewage. Sludge-handling equipment is at two-thirds capacity. Funding for the plant and its equipment is divided among the federal, state and local governments — the federal government pays 75 percent, the state pays 12.5 percent and the village pays 12.5 percent.

Fifty years ago — 1968

Calendar Girl for the Month of May is Kathy Chase, a senior at Cardinal Mindszenty High School. Kathy is the daughter of Mrs. Margaret Smith, 109 East Second St., Dunkirk. She is presently the chairman of social affairs for the Student Council and an active member of the CMHS Drama Club. She is also a member of the Honor Society and one of the head majorettes. Kathy plans to become an executive secretary after graduation.
