Twenty years ago — 1998

Members of the Major Benjamin Bosworth, Silver Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, recently planted a walnut tree at the monument marking the place where the original tree stood. The monument is made of grist stone used in the first mill started by David Dickinson and Abel Cleveland about 1804. The walnut tree was renowned to be the largest in New York State, measuring 10 feet in diameter. The monument, which is located at Route 20 and Main Road, was dedicated by the Major Benjamin Bosworth Chapter in 1928.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Kelly JoAnn Shuster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shuster of Fredonia, has graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. While studying law, Ms. Shuster was a student advisor, and later a governor, for the Student Bar Association. She was a member of the Mock Trial Team, the Health Matrix Journal and the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. Ms. Shuster is employed by the Attorney General’s office in Wilmington, Del.

Forty years ago — 1978

Joseph Vacanti of Dunkirk, the man who has participated in more than 495 boat rescues on Lake Erie, is scheduled for a future appearance on the television panel show, “To Tell The Truth.” The self-apppointed guardian of the harbor for the past 10 years, Mr. Vacanti’s rescue adventure on Lake Erie on Jan. 26 was his last. His retirement means he will take with him his old “private” public service rescue boat which carried him on many rescue and assist operations. Of his last heroic attempt, Mr. Vacanti said, “I lost the feeling in my fingertips and the toes of my right foot plus $1,000 of boat, motor and equipment.”

Fifty years ago — 1968

Student of the Week is Walter Drag, Dunkirk High School’s senior class president and valedictorian, who will begin working toward a government career next fall at Fredonia State University College. He is the son of Mrs. Evelyn Drag of 123 South Zebra St., Dunkirk. As an early admission student, Walter has completed two semesters of work at Fredonia State. He is listed in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” He also has been elected to three terms as president of the Dunkirk Teen-Age Republicans.
