Twenty years ago — 1998

Stan Kawski, a Korean War veteran, spoke at the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of the Soldiers Monument at Evergreen Cemetery in the Town of Portland. Doris Kawski, president of the Chautauqua County Legion Auxiliary, and Arthur Donovan, Commander of Brocton Legion Post 34, laid a wreath at the monument. The event was celebrated with music from the Brocton High School Band, the posting of color guards, a 21-gun salute, taps and remarks from citizens and local officials. More than 50 people attended.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Fredonia officials will investigate the possibility of establishing a “sister city” relationship with Valle Dolma, Sicily, especially since a large percentage (estimated 75 to 95 percent) of Fredonia’s Italian-American residents have roots traced to this hamlet. After hearing a presentation from Margaret Valone, who recently visited Valle Dolma, a committee was formed to look into the formation of a “sister city” relationship.

Forty years ago — 1978

The county’s towns, villages and cities are facing the court-mandated necessity of a revaluation of real estate within the next four or five years that could cost upward of $2 million. The county is attempting to prepare the community for the project and trying to put together a system which will hold down the cost.

Fifty years ago –1968

Joanna D. Charewicz, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Charewicz of Route 39, Forestville is the Student of the Week. She ranks first in her class and is a member of the National Honor Society. Joanna served as freshman class president and junior class secretary. Her hobbies are skiing, reading and dancing.
