Twenty years ago — 1998

Kenneth Horey, the late Pomfret councilman, will be honored during a ceremony dedicating a grandfather clock in his memory at the Darwin R. Barker Library in Fredonia. William Larson and Dr. Willard Gaeddert chaired the effort to raise funds for this unique handmade Amish clock crafted by a local clockmaker in the Amish community. A retired meatcutter, Mr. Horey was elected to the town board in 1981 as the first elected Democrat in Pomfret’s history, breaking what had been a 150-year full Republican majority on the board.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Student of the Week is Carol Zirkle, a senior at Brocton Central School. She is the daughter of Marvin and Joyce Zirkle of Lake Avenue, Brocton. Carol has been president of her class for the past three years and currently serves as president of the Student Council. Secretary of the National Honor Society, she is captain of both the varsity basketball and volleyball teams. Following her graduation, Carol plans to attend Fredonia State University College to major in math.

Forty years ago — 1978

The Cassadaga Valley Centeral School Cougar Cadets marching band will host the first “Music in Motion” marching band pageant and field competition at the Chautauqua County Volunteer Firemen’s Grounds in Stockton. The event is jointly sponsored by Cassadaga Valley Central School and the Cassadaga Valley Marching Band Booster Club. Eight top high school marching bands from Western New York and Pennsylvania will compete for top honors and many trophies. Each band will give a 10-minute presentation on a regulation size field.

Fifty years ago –1968

The Chautauqua County Fire Chiefs Association joined the ranks of other groups in the county to endorse a Dunkirk man as Fireman of the Year. At the regular monthly meeting, a motion was passed citing William Hagberg, a member of Dunkirk Hose Co. No. 1, for saving a life. Mr. Hagberg had been cited by the Erie County Fire Chiefs Association for giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a many injured at a fireman’s convention in Gowanda.
